Inherent Flame Retardant Fitted Sheet
It is important to note that the primary advantage of using Inherent flame retardant fitted sheets is that they have a high level of protection against thermal hazards. Inherent flame retardant fitted sheets will not ignite in normal oxygen levels. Their properties allow the fibres inside to expand when exposed to heat or a flame, eliminating any space for oxygen to be contained within the fabric, thus extinguishing the opportunity for combustion. This means that inherent flame-retardant fitted sheets provide superior insulation, ensuring the oxidized fibres are thermally stable. Inherent FR fitted sheets provide a high level of protection against thermal hazards.
Treated Flame Retardant Fitted Sheets
Treated flame-retardant fitted sheets begin with cotton fibre, which is inherently flammable. It is a cheaper alternative to Inherent fitted sheets as it is made up of a blend of either nylon or polyester and cotton. The newly created fabric is then 'Treated' with a chemical flame retardant to prevent the fitted sheets from going up in flames.
*One advantage an Inherent flame retardant fitted sheets has over a treated one is that it consistently has a higher thermal protective performance (TPP) score. This is a measurement used to show the protective garments' thermal insulation performance against convective and radiant heat exposure. The higher the TPP rating of the garment, the higher the provided protection.
But where Treated FR fabrics fall short in comparison to Inherent fabrics, Treated fabrics are lightweight and flexible. Additionally, they have a shorter life span but are less expensive. From an economical point of view, treated flame retardant fitted sheets are better than Inherentflame retardant fitted sheets.
*Despite Treated FR fitted sheets being lightweight, they are still heavier than Inherent fitted sheets. They have a bigger mass than Inherent flame retardant fitted sheets, which can benefit them as the more mass placed between the wearer and the hazard the better. For both inherent FR fitted sheets and treated fitted sheets, protection is easy. Balancing it with comfort, durability and economic factors is where it becomes difficult.

There are two common types of fire-retardant fabric material treatments.
Coating Method: Fire-resistant back-coating is applied to the fitted sheets in question. This makes the fitted sheets more suitable for upholstery by stiffening them. As a result of the coating process, the hang of the fabric is less natural than other fabric treatments, making it less ideal for use as the curtain fabric.
Chemical Dipping:Chemical dipping is another frequent fire-retardant technique, typically used in fabric composed of natural fibers (or with a high percentage of natural fibers). The fabric is immersed in a chemical solution, which dissolves into the fibers and forms a barrier between the fiber and the flame.
- Use the standard or cotton wash cycle. Most fire retardant Fitted Sheets are typically cleaned at 140 degrees with standard washing detergent.
- Flip your fitted sheets inside out. This will aid in maintaining their fire resistance.
- Separately launder fire retardant material fitted sheets from other fitted sheets. Failure to do so may damage the fire retardant fitted sheets or the high visibility components of the apparel.
- Avoid using bleach, vinegar, and other additives. Over time, bleach will degrade the molecular link between the cloth and fire retardant treatment, lowering its flame resistance.
- Avoid using fabric softeners, starch, or any additives. A fabric softener can diminish a fabric's flame resistance by concealing it, which is also flammable.
- Hard water is highly detrimental to fire retardant fitted sheets because it can deposit magnesium and calcium into tiny packets. These are combustible.
- Use neither starch nor detergents containing animal fats. Starch functions as a fuel, but animal fats are combustible. If your fire retardant fitted sheets are dry-cleaned, you must ensure that no starch is used.
